Old Agios Athanasios, a paradise carved in stone

Immersed in the history of Macedonia and nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Kaimaktsalan, the picturesque village of Old Agios Athanasios beckons those travelers seeking a journey through time and tradition. A few years ago, I had the fortune to discover this charming Greek destination that fulfilled every promise it gave me of adventure, relaxation, and culinary delights.

As I wandered through the cobblestone streets of Old Agios Athanasios, I was immediately captivated by its timeless charm. The traditional houses built with hewn stone, wood, and impressive tile roofs, exuded an aura of rustic elegance, offering a glimpse into the village's rich heritage. Every labyrinthine alley transported me to an era where architecture was defined by simplicity and aesthetics.

Old Agios Athanasios bears the weight of centuries with grace and dignity, evident in every corner. The village square emerges as a lively canvas, where locals and visitors converge in a celebration of traditions, lively conversations, and the aromas of Greek coffee. At the same time, nearby Kaimaktsalan provides a fairy-tale backdrop, inviting travelers to explore its pristine landscapes and the grandeur of Macedonian nature. The highlight of the village is the Church of the Assumption, built in the 17th century with a well-preserved iconostasis and Byzantine-style icons. The chapel of Agios Athanasios is ideal for admiring the view towards Lake Vegoritida and the lakeside villages, while a visit to the chapel of Agios Georgios, where nature creates its own works of art, is also worth it.

Old Agios Athanasios transforms with the changing seasons, each bringing its own unique charm. In winter, the Kaimaktsalan Ski Center attracts snow enthusiasts to an adventurous and snow-covered wonderland. Spring and summer reveal a mosaic of wildflowers, making it the ideal time for hiking and exploring the surrounding nature trails. Autumn brings an explosion of warm hues, creating a picturesque backdrop for leisurely strolls in the village.

Yet it wasn't just the natural beauty and architecture of the village that enchanted me. It was also the warmth of its people and the richness of its culinary traditions. The evenings come alive with the sounds of traditional Greek music, as tavernas echo with laughter and clinking glasses, offering a sensory celebration of local flavors. I savored rich mountain dishes in hospitable taverns, enjoying savory pies filled with local cheeses, aromatic herbs, and tender meats. Each dish was a celebration of the region's abundant produce and time-honored recipes, a testament to the deep connection between food and community.

As I bid farewell to Old Agios Athanasios, I carried with me experiences and memories that would call me back like sirens to their warm embrace. This brief excursion was much more than a simple escape from the city's hectic pace. It was a deep dive into the region's rich heritage and vibrant culture. With the promise to return, I left full of gratitude for the hospitality and priceless moments that this stony corner of the world offered me.
