Meteora, between earth and sky

Those dark, beastly rocks with the floating monasteries rising imposingly above Kalambaka and between Pindos and Antichasia are Meteora, a place where the ordinary is confused with the unreal. Meteora is not just a destination, it is an encounter with the divine, a testament to human endurance and a refuge for the soul that has attracted seekers, mystics and travelers for centuries.

In Greek, "Meteora" means "floating in the air" and that is the feeling you have as you get closer to them. Visit the monasteries that have been carved into the rocks and caves since the 11th century, monasteries built by hermit monks that prove that determination, will and unwavering faith can work wonders. Inside, visitors are enchanted by the ornate frescoes and libraries that respectfully house ancient manuscripts, while the exteriors and courtyards offer serenity and breathtaking panoramic views.

Apart from its spiritual significance, Meteora is a natural wonder and a paradise for those who love hiking, photography and outdoor excursions. Follow the paths that criss-cross the landscape, explore caves and hidden chapels, and wander around the surrounding villages and Kalambaka. Climbing enthusiasts love Meteora and the centuries-old tradition established by monks using ropes, nets and their bare hands.

The sunsets at Meteora are unique. As the sun sinks below the horizon, it "paints" the rocks and monasteries with a warm golden hue and an ethereal glow. If you are captivated by this soul-soothing spectacle and find yourself somewhere out on the rocks at night, you will have the opportunity to admire the night sky which, with the minimal light pollution of the area, reveals its glittering treasures.

Meteora invites us on a journey of awe and wonder to discover the secrets hidden in its wild beauty and reminds us of the unlimited possibilities that exist when faith, strength and will fly together. UNESCO has declared Meteora a protected monument of humanity, and not without reason, for there, on the God-given rocks, if you reach out your hand, you almost touch the sky!!!!
