Lefkada, a turquoise dream

Let me take you on a sunny journey to a piece of paradise called Lefkada. It was early June a few years ago when I found myself on this beautiful Greek island in the Ionian Sea, drawn by promises of sandy beaches with turquoise waters, charming villages, and stories of a simpler life. Crossing the bridge that connects Lefkada with Acarnania, I felt like I was becoming part of a painting with lush green hills and crystal-clear waters that sparkled like precious gems.

My first excursion was to Porto Katsiki beach, where the sea had a shade of blue I had only seen in my dreams. Nestled beneath towering cliffs, this stunning beach is a testament to nature's artistry. As I descended the steep steps into its embrace, I felt a sense of reverence for the beauty surrounding me: a symphony of rocks, sea, and sky in perfect harmony. I laid on the sand and let the worries of the world drift away with each passing wave.

In the afternoon, the town of Lefkada stole a piece of my heart with the Castle of Agia Mavra, its labyrinthine alleys, and charming squares. Every corner was filled with warmth and hospitality, as if we had known each other for years. The neoclassical mansions and Byzantine churches revealed a new chapter in the island's historical past. At the Archaeological Museum, I followed the footsteps of ancient civilizations, from the Paleolithic era to the late Roman years, admiring artifacts that spoke of a heritage enduring through the ages.

In the following days, I discovered other hidden treasures, such as Egremni beach and Kathisma beach. The cosmopolitan Nidri, one of the island's most famous destinations, brims with vitality and offers plenty of options for coffee, food, and shopping. Nearby, the gorge and waterfalls of Dimosari testify to nature's untamed element. In Agios Nikitas, I wandered through streets lined with colorful houses, and while sipping Lefkadian wine, I enjoyed the view of the turquoise waters, where fishing boats gently swayed—images that reminded me that the Greek islands have a unique energy that always attracts visitors.

Venturing inland, I experienced the timeless charm of traditional villages. In Karya, I marveled at the famous "karsaniki stitch", a unique embroidery technique, the towering plane trees, and the picturesque cobblestone streets. Nearby, the village of Englouvi welcomed me with its rustic charm and warm hospitality, offering a glimpse into an agricultural life untouched by time. In the south of the island, Cape Lefkatas, one of the most renowned cliffs of antiquity, stands guard over the sea, its dramatic silhouette a reminder of nature's raw power and grandeur.

Throughout my journey, the culinary delights of Lefkada proved to be a feast for the senses. In traditional tavernas and seaside cafés, I tasted everything from handmade pies and freshly caught seafood to sweet and sour sofrito and Englouvi lentils with riganada. I didn’t miss the chance to take home some mandolato, cinnamon and orange rosoli liqueur, and of course, local thyme honey.

As I bid farewell to Lefkada, I knew that this enchanting island would always hold a special place in my heart. Lefkada might be just a dot on the map, but for me, it’s a place where time stands still, dreams come alive, and beautiful adventures are as timeless as the turquoise waters of the Lefkadian sea.
