Kastoria, a Byzantine gem by the lake

Nestled between the shores of Lake Orestiada and embraced by the lush mountains of Vitsi and Grammos, Kastoria stands out like a fairytale town, its charm woven into the fabric of its cobblestone streets and the serene lakeside beauty. As I approached, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and anticipation to explore every corner of this Macedonian place that immediately captivates you with its stunning landscapes.

One of the first points of my visit was to explore the shores of the lake, watching the fishermen cast their nets and enjoying the presence of beautiful bird species that make the scene even more idyllic. I walked along the shores for quite some time, savoring the beauty of the landscape and watching the sun sink below the horizon in a blaze of golden hues.

The charm of Kastoria lies not only in its picturesque surroundings but also in its rich history. As I wandered through a maze of narrow alleyways and aristocratic mansions, torn between the beautiful neighborhoods of Doltso and Apozari, I felt like traveling back in time. The cobblestone streets echoed with the voices of centuries, while the Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches stood as silent witnesses to the city's past. The Church of Agios Nikolaos and the historic Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa, adorned with elaborate frescoes and eternal beauty, left me in awe, while at every step, I stumbled upon other hidden gems of the city's cultural and historical heritage.

I couldn't miss visiting the imposing Byzantine Museum, a treasure trove of religious artifacts and priceless Byzantine icons. As I admired the intricate details of each piece, I experienced a feeling of wonder for the skill and dedication required to create these masterpieces. On the other hand, the Folklore Museum of Kastoria, a representative sample of Kastorian Mansion, offers a glimpse into the rich tradition of the region, with exhibits that capture the traditional costumes, objects, and handicrafts lovingly preserved by the residents, weaving a narrative of resilience and cultural pride.

For those who love underground beauty, a visit to the Dragon's Cave is a must, as it is a natural wonder full of legend and mystery and one of the most impressive caves in the Balkans. As I descended into the depths of the cave, I felt a profound respect for the natural forces that shaped this underground wonder over millions of years.

Of course, no visit to Kastoria is complete without succumbing to its culinary temptations. From hearty traditional dishes like meatballs with “makalo” and carp stew to the famous savory and sweet local pies and liqueur made from cranberries and walnuts, the city's gastronomic scene is a feast for the palate. Each meal seemed like a journey into the traditional flavors of Kastoria and an opportunity to visit this special place again.

As I left behind the tranquil waters of Lake Orestiada, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the serene charm and warm hospitality of this city. In a world that often seems chaotic and fast-paced, Kastoria stands as a reminder to slow down, appreciate the beauty of the present moment, and embrace the simple joys that life and nature have to offer.
