After a long, refreshing walk in the heart of nature, I returned home with a "bunch" of acorns in my hands. These humble treasures hold a special place in my heart, symbolizing strength, good fortune and unlimited possibilities. So I was given the excuse to craft and began the process of preparing my acorns:
- In a bowl add water and some vinegar.
- Add the acorns and swiss them around.
- Take the acorns out of the water and rinse them.
- Let them dry for 2 hours on a paper towel.
- Place the acorns on a foil covered, flat baking pan and bake at 350 oF (175 oC) for 15 min, stir and bake another 15 min.
- Remove the acorns from the oven and let them cool completely.
- A lot of the caps will fall off. Simply use your hot glue gun to attach the caps to the nuts. You can do it in this phase or after you have painted them. It depends on the craft.
- Use acrylic craft paints and paint brushes to paint your acorns in one color or more creating designs. You can also use a metallic paint spray if you don’t have much time for painting.
- Let them dry and the acorns are ready for decorating! You can put them in a glass jar with some leaves, in a decorating plate with a beautiful candle or just spread them on your furniture . You can also use them for further crafting!
Paint acorns monochrome or with different colors and patterns not only for winter decorations, but also all year round. Just pick the shades that match the season and the mood you are in! You can add glitter to make them even shinier. I followed ... a minimalist approach and just painted them with matte and metallic colors.
If you have kids, it’s a beautiful idea to spend some quality time with them and create not only painted acorns but some priceless and happy memories too.
P.S. I also picked some pine cones. Just clean and bake them like acorns and give them a touch of the color you like!!!
